Enough of the anti-commercial dingbats saying "hip hop" and "rap" aren't the same even if hip hop didn't specifically denote a genre of music, rap is a subset of hip hop, and so if Eminem is a rap artist, he is also a hip-hop artist by default. Although "hip hop" may have once referred to a broad social movement encompassing the musical genre of "rap," it is now synonymous with rap as it is used in the context of music.
You're all forgetting that the meanings of words evolve as people use them. Hip hop iz a type of music, not the same as rap. Hip-hop consists of rap (among other things), breakdancing, and different styles of dressing and slang.
Hip-hop is a culture or movement that began in the streets. Although the media tries to sell it off as the same thing, it's not. Rap is by no means the same thing as hip-hop.Also, calling peoples newbies or "uptight runescpae nerding bastarding prick" is not really polite, or appropriate for a resource like Wikipedia. If you feel like the two subjects need splitting, head over to Talk:Hip hop music and make your case there.
